Dated: 1 November 2004 Purchase of Cayce Building
A time delay for the purchase of the Cayce building for a Southern Cultural Centre near our capital city was due to the untimely death of the owner. The estate of the seller is administered by an attorney in California and he has now approved the sales contract to purchase the property.
An additional two week delay occurred because the plat did not show the location of the building. A new survey was performed and everything is now in order for closing sometime in the first week of November.
James E. Layden Chairman SCLoS
13 September 2004 To: Members Rangers and Friends of the SCLoS Subject: Purchase of $198,000 building in Cayce, S.C.
I am pleased to announce arrangements have been made for the SCLoS to open a Southern Cultural Centre in Cayce, SC. One of our 1st South Carolina Rangers in Florida came forward and offered to help. He will pledge property as security to borrow 80% of the selling price ($158,400) and the SCLoS will contribute the 20% down payment ($39,600) required by the bank. Since we do not have the down payment, an individual will mortgage his home for the needed money in order to give the SCLoS time to raise the funds.
Currently we have less than half the required down payment, but we do have promise of additional contributions. We have been blessed with an excellent response from our 1st South Carolina Rangers, but our members and friends have not responded to my appeal in significant numbers. We certainly have the capability to buy the building outright if our members recognized the need.
It is not as if I am asking the impossible or for others to do what I am not willing to do myself. I have provided to the SCLoS since January 2004 a substantial amount of funds that will be beneficial in the future. Also to set the record straight, no one except two full time employees (state director and Abbeville store manager) receive any compensation from the SCLoS.
Please remember, donations are tax deductible when checks are made out to the MNK Foundation /Cayce and mailed to the South Carolina League of the South, Post Office Box 24014, Columbia, S. C. CSA 29224. Those contributing $1,000 or more will receive a certificate suitable for framing and their names will be prominently displayed on a plaque in the Cayce store.
To raise funds to stock the store, we are offering numbered gift certificates of any amount at a 10% discount. For example, a $100 gift certificate will cost $90. The certificates will be redeemed in both the Abbeville and Cayce stores. Mail checks payable to the Southern Cultural Centre to the address shown above and your certificates will be provided to you by return mail.
The South has been under continuous attack for the past 50 years by the Yankee Empire and its chosen elitists. The South Carolina League of the South is not going to take it any more. Southerners are identified as hated people and hated people can be annihilated at will with little consequence. The enclosed picture shows the beginning of the next phase of degradation. The billboard is located in Atlanta, GA across the street from the Georgia dome and the Phillips arena entrance. When the burning of the Saint Andrews cross can be displayed on a billboard with pride, it will not be long before the hated southern people will be abused with impunity.
Your support in this matter will be greatly appreciated and will have a profound result.
For a free South Carolina,
James E. Layden Chairman SCLoS EXPANSION OF THE SOUTHERN CULTURAL CENTRE PURPOSE: To request your support for initial funding of the South Carolina League of the South’s (SCLoS) second Southern Cultural Centre. COMMITMENT: The first SCLoS Southern Cultural Centre (The League Building) was purchased, renovated and stocked with some $68,000 in donations collected in 90 days and opened for business in Abbeville, South Carolina in November 2001. It has been a success for merchandise sales ($70,000 gross/year) and for creating events to promote Southern culture. We are now in a unique position for expansion, with experience, knowledge and desire, not only in Abbeville, but also in other cities in South Carolina. Abbeville expansion began with merchandise sales over the Internet in October 2003 and on 22 April 2004 we took the opportunity to buy Abbeville’s Secession Hill for $25,000. In addition our presence near our capital city will be demonstrated by opening a second Southern Cultural Centre in Cayce, just southwest and within sight of downtown Columbia. On 4 June 2004 we accepted a counter offer of $198,000 for building and lot appraised at $268,000 and tax assessed at $250,000. FUND RAISING: The incurred debt was not entered into lightly. We are completely dependent on merchandise sales and donations to make these ventures successful, but this base of operation in Abbeville and Cayce will give us the momentum to do likewise in at least eighteen other South Carolina cities. The new Southern Cultural Centre of Cayce will be financed initially through contributions, and then through final payoff by sales of merchandise. Those initial contributions are vital in order to provide funds to cover the monthly notes until that time the new center is “up and running.” Those contributing $1000 or more will receive a certificate of appreciation and their name will be appropriately displayed in the Cayce store. Our real estate broker, Richard Bonnette of Columbia, SC will donate his sales commission ($5,000 to $7,000) to the Southern Cultural Centre and he is not even a member. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION – THE CAYCE SOUTHERN CULTURAL CENTRE: The selected building for the Cayce Southern Cultural Centre was originally a Huddle House restaurant, but all fixtures were removed as it was later used for a pawnshop. The twelve-year-old 1,800 sq. ft. brick building, with minor upgrade will be ready for occupancy within two to three weeks. The 0.64-acre lot contains the building and an asphalt parking lot marked with 37 parking spaces. There is a concrete block enclosure required for restaurant garbage collection behind the building that can be removed for additional parking or to allow for building expansion. The Cayce Southern Cultural Centre faces South Carolina highway 321 near the top of a hill at a point where five lanes of traffic pass in both directions. It is only ¼ miles from and in full view I-26 and less than one block from exit traffic of I-77. A stoplight allows vehicles to turn onto a side street between the Cayce Southern Cultural Centre and a Hardees restaurant across the street. A sixty room Ramada Inn is behind Hardees and adjacent to a shopping mall containing various businesses including a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. The Abbeville success will be duplicated near South Carolina’s capitol city for all to see. The State house and large downtown building can be seen from the Cayce Southern Cultural Centre and our 20’ by 30’ Confederate flag waving from a donated 90 foot pole surrounded by the flags of 13 Confederate states will show our presence. Southern merchandise will be sold to local customers and interstate travelers who see our signs and flags. Authors, poets, artisans, musicians and others will be featured by events scheduled in the store, on radio and television, the print media and at rallies. The traffic volume will assure exposure of southern products in conservative Lexington County. For comparison, the annual average daily traffic count in front of the Abbeville store is 7,600 and 58,500 in front of the Cayce Southern Cultural Centre. The sales volume in Cayce is expected to be five to ten times greater than what is now considered normal in Abbeville. There is a great demand for Southern merchandise because the political correct crowd has forced other stores to remove these items from their shelves. We expect to fill this demand, educate Southern people and flood the area with Confederate flags. The SCLoS earnestly seeks your support to give this new exciting step forward the momentum needed to ensure its success. Many of you have answered the call before, and the Southern Cultural Centre in Abbeville stands as a tribute to your dedication and generosity. Your continued support is requested as the League takes this step forward with property within sight of the South Carolina State House. If you were unable to assist in the past, now is the time to answer the call. Will you help us in this endeavor? Contributions are tax deductible when checks are made out to: MNK Foundation and sent to MNK Foundation, P.O. Box 24014, Columbia, SC CSA 29620. For a free South Carolina, James E. Layden Chairman SCLoS 15 June 2004
