South Carolina League of the South Sixth Annual Conference...Staff Writer

The South Carolina League of the South held its Sixth Annual Conference on Saturday, 29 October in West Columbia about three miles from our Cayce Southern Patriot Shop.  While we always want all of our members to attend, we know that some have good reasons for being unable to attend.  That being said, this year's attendance was considered average.  But from those in attendance, this year's conference was said to be one of the best.  If you did not make it, perhaps you can attend next year.

We had a good line-up of speakers and good entertainment.  The conference opened with the advance of the South Carolina state flag and the Third National Confederate flag by member Dennis Crocker and his young friend Caleb Webber.  Director Robert Hayes then welcomed those in attendance, and Dr. John Cobin led us in invocation.  Chairman James Layden then gave the chairman's report entitled, “I Didn't Promise You a Rose Garden”.  You should have been there.  Thankfully, he did not try to sing the song.  Next, Board Member Lourie Salley showed and discussed the WIS “Awareness” TV show on which be appeared to refute their reporting based on the SPLC that SCLOS was a hate group.  Our Cayce shop manager, David Sutter, discussed some of the both amusing and ridiculous comments he gets from customers. His talk appears in this issue.

Miss Julie Ann Scott sang the original “Dixieland”.  She had the audience join her in singing the chorus, and it was quite inspiring.  Board Member Ed Eichelberger gave a program in how to contact and influence our state senators and representatives.  Ed was followed by Jim Hanks, Jr., Member Recruitment and Retention Chairman, who encouraged us all to recruit new members.

Chairman Layden presented the following awards to deserving members: The Wade Hampton “Stand and Fight” Award went to Jim Hanks, Jr., Laura Tesh, Lourie Salley, David Sutter, David MacInnes, and Robert Hayes; the William Gilmore Simms Literary Award was presented to Thomas Moore; and the John C. Calhoun “Political Action” Award went to Ed Eichelberger.  The Order of the Palmetto Patriot, the highest honour bestowed by the South Carolina League of the South, was presented to Sherrill “Mac” McCoy for his dedicated service as our web-master and editor of the SC Patriot.

The conference adjourned for a hamburger and hot dog dinner on the premises, allowing our members to join in fellowship.  After a satisfying meal and good fellowship, we reassembled for the afternoon session.

Director Robert Hayes led with the director's report by highlighting events during the past year and some planned activities for the upcoming year.  Miss Julie Ann Scott again provided entertainment.  T. V. Weber then gave some of the reasons why he and his wife decided to move to South Carolina from Illinois.  National League President, Dr. Michael Hill, gave the keynote address in which he discussed the League's new strategy.  Dr. Cobin gave a closing prayer, and Robert Hayes adjourned the Sixth Annual State Conference.
